United States Marine Chamber Orchestra presents Unlikely Pairings

Marine Chamber Orchestra

Sunday, Feb. 13 | 2 PM

Maj. Ryan Nowlin, conducting

Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center, Northern Virginia Community College, Alexandria, VA

Johannes Brahms’ well-loved Double Concerto, his final work for orchestra, is a true masterpiece requiring virtuosic playing and seamless collaboration from the unlikely pairing of violin and cello. Brought new life and character by accomplished soloists Gunnery Sgt. Sheng-Tsung Wang and Staff Sgt. Char Prescott, the work is seen in a new light when performed by the smaller, chamber orchestra. The concert is balanced with another unlikely pairing: the father of the symphony, Franz Joseph Haydn, and contemporary composer Anna Clyne, whose Sound and Fury not only draws inspiration from the themes of Haydn’s Symphony No. 60, but also from Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

  • BRAHMS | Concerto for Violin and Cello in A minor, Opus 102
  • HAYDN | Symphony No. 60 in C, Il distratto
  • CLYNE | Sound and Fury
